APAMT is an organization committed to educating, poison information and control, advocacy with the general public and government agencies to prevent self harm, chemical control and safety. The present meeting is being held after 3 years in person. The theme of the meeting is "Critical Care for Clinical Toxicology in Resource Poor Regions " Many international and national experts will deliberate on many aspects of pesticides exposure, prevention, detection and treatment. The meeting would also focus on locally prevalent snakes envenomation as well as plant toxins.
Simulation based learning has been advocated and is being used to enhance the knowledge of the students/health care professionals and sharpen their skills to manage medical emergency.
A team of trained clinical toxicologist from Sydney, Australia under the leadership of Prof Michael Downs/Dr Narain will conduct a simulation based toxicology training program for the health care professionals. Thi interactive workshop will be focusing on pesticides, plant poisoning, club drugs an snake envenomation scenarios. Dr Satish Mittar, Dr Dushan, Dr Mohan and their team have conducted similar training programs across the world. The students will the opportunity to interact and learn from their experience.
Over the years, India has emerged as a Hotspot for recreational drug consumption. The recent data from NDPS suggests that increasing amounts of club drug consignments are being intercepted all over India, especially in metro and tier 2 cities. Since many drugs have overlapping clinical presentation and symptoms, emergency physicians sometimes find it difficult to identify and correctly diagnose club drug toxicity.
A post conference joint workgroup meeting is being planned at Govt medical college , Trivandrum under the guidance of Prof Viswanathan. Experts from APAMT, EAPCCT ( European Association of Poison Centres & Clinical Toxicologists) , ACMT ( American College of Medical Toxicology ) and Emergency Medicine Association of India (EMA) will brain storm over the various strategies of identifying/ recognizing the club drugs overdoses. These joint evidence based guidelines would help the ER physicians of Asia pacific region to manage their club drug overdose patients in a more scientific and effective manner .
